If you’re a dog owner who enjoys canine company on the road, make sure you keep your pet safe and comfortable on the journey. Confine him in the back seat of your car, or behind a grate in your s-u-v, where he won’t cause an accident trying to climb in your lap, or slam into the windshield if you have to hit the brakes. Give him a soft blanket to sleep on and a few chew toys to keep him busy.

As you drive, keep the car cool with a-c or fresh air. If it’s a long jaunt, bring food and water so you can give your pal something to eat and drink when you stop for short breaks. Don’t forget his leash. And never leave him in the car alone on a hot day. The car could quickly overheat and lead to hyperthermia.
