It’s never too early to teach your new puppy the most important lesson he’ll ever learn - his name. Your puppy’s name - let’s call him “Sparky” for example - is the one sound that will get his attention, no matter how distracted he is by matters of canine importance.
Ready for lesson one? Display a tasty treat safely in front of you. Then say the dog’s name with great enthusiasm: “Sparky!” Any sign of attention and recognition - just looking up at you - is rewarded by the treat and praise: “good boy!”
Every time your dog hears that sound - “Sparky! Good boy!” – he will associate it with good things – you, and the treat, of course. He’ll learn many other sounds in his life, but none are more important than his own name.
