If you recently got a new male puppy, and you don’t plan to breed him, you may be considering if and when to have him neutered. The procedure not only prevents the dog from impregnating an amorous stray – it can reduce your pet’s tendency to roam, mark his territory, and exhibit aggression.
In the past, most veterinarians recommended waiting to neuter a dog until the pup was six months old, but today, many veterinarians are performing so-called pediatric neuters. This means the puppy is roughly eight weeks old and weighs at least two pounds. Talk to your veterinarian to determine what’s best for your pet – most recommend neutering between four and six months of age.
