Grooming is a natural canine activity, but if your pooch licks his paws excessively, it’s a problem you’ll want to lick before it gets worse.

Excessive licking and chewing can cause hair loss. The exposed skin becomes inflamed, which gives rise to more licking, creating a vicious cycle.

Allergies, parasites, pain, or boredom may be at the root of your pup’s compulsive licking behavior. So inspect your pet’s paws. Red or swollen feet could indicate allergies or parasites. If the chewing is limited to one paw, look for a cut or cyst. Check between the toes for splinters that may have become embedded in your dog’s skin.

Treatment depends on the cause of the licking, and may consist of ointments, creams, or behavior therapy.
