How do I choose a puppy?

Choosing a puppy is a big, big decision because it’s such a long-term commitment, and compatibility should be your top priority. Take exercise, for example. Think about your schedule, your lifestyle, your activity level, and choose a breed or mixed-breed puppy with exercise needs you can happily meet. Consider the dog’s other needs, too, from feeding and grooming to training and health care, and all the activities you hope to share with him.
After doing some research, select several breeds with characteristics and basic instincts you like. Then start looking for that perfect puppy. But don’t simply go for the cutest, friendliest, shyest, or smallest puppy in a litter. Choose one with an energy level that closely matches your own.
